Laughing, Weeping, Living

Life happens. You laugh about it or cry about it, sometimes both.

Little Miracles to Remember

on July 1, 2013

So sometimes I need a little kick in the head to remember that everything is in God’s hands and I don’t need to worry so much.

Since Agnes had her little episode this weekend, requiring massive amounts of extra oxygen, switching to the oscillatory ventilator, getting antibiotics and a blood transfusion, etc., all the plans for her care have been set back. Which means she was not extubated and taken off the ventilator today as we had planned going in to the weekend. The new plan this morning is to give the antibiotics some time, grow the cultures to see if an infection caused all the bruhaha (sp?) [spellcheck says it’s “brouhaha”], wean the oscillator and try to get her back on the regular vent tomorrow. Then maybe think about extubation later in the week, maybe. Maybe.

Okay, I can deal with that, especially since I got to sleep 6 1/2 hours in a row last night. That really helps. Jeremy and I had already scheduled Fr. Sal to come pray with us at Agnes’ bedside this morning, and he arrived shortly after the morning doctors’ rounds. We prayed a brief prayer for the specific intention that Agnes could get on the regular ventilator tomorrow and off all ventilators by the end of the week. When Fr. Sal left shortly after the prayer, we left the NICU to go have lunch. After lunch we went back to see Agnes and she was hooked up to the regular ventilator! The nurse told us the oscillatory ventilator was having some mechanical problems, and since they were planning to take Agnes off it soon anyway, well, they just decided to do it now rather than fix the oscillator.

If that’s not a miracle, I don’t know what is. Also as a side note, I am calling Fr. Sal to come visit Agnes every time she has a thing coming up, because he is officially her lucky charm. Or speed dial to heaven, or something.

Okay, God, I get it. I’ll try to chill out.
